The Arab League has condemned the ongoing Israeli violations against Palestinian prisoners and detainees, expressing deep concern over what it described as a systematic policy targeting prisoners, in the wake of the recent assault on Palestinian prisoner Marwan Barghouti inside Israeli jails.

The League said in a statement today that these practices constitute a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, holding the Israeli government fully responsible for Barghouti's safety, and considering what prisoners are subjected to as amounting to war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The League called for the formation of an urgent international investigation committee, the allowance of an independent medical visit to prisoner Marwan Barghouti and his transfer to a hospital if his health condition requires it, the cessation of all forms of torture and mistreatment, and the release of Palestinian prisoners held for political reasons.
