Syria's Ministry of Interior announced the arrest of the cell accused of the bombings that struck the capital Damascus on Tuesday.

In a statement received by the German news agency (dpa), the Syrian interior ministry said: "We have apprehended all members of the terrorist cell responsible for the recent Damascus bombings. The cell was dismantled following a complex security operation conducted in coordination with the General Intelligence Directorate and security forces, which carried out simultaneous raids in Damascus and its countryside."

The ministry added: "The operation resulted in the arrest of all members of the terrorist cell. The security operations targeted sites in Al-Qutayfah, Sayyida Zaynab, the Qudsaya suburb, and Ush al-Wurur. Investigations are ongoing with those detained to uncover the details of the terrorist plot."

It further clarified that "the cell's affiliations, the identities of its members, and their roles will be presented to the public after the completion of investigations. The security operation has ended the activity of the cell involved in the recent Damascus bombings."

Syrian Interior Minister Engineer Anas Khattab said on the platform X: "The cell responsible for the terrorist bombings that targeted Damascus two days ago is now in our custody. Following the completion of investigations, we will reveal to the public the identities of the cell members, their roles, and all their affiliations."

Since the afternoon hours of Thursday, the Wurur neighbourhood in the north-east of the capital Damascus has been the scene of a security operation by Syrian security forces, with a security cordon imposed and residents barred from entering.

Residents of the Ush al-Wurur neighbourhood told dpa that "security forces imposed a cordon around the neighbourhood, which is adjacent to the Barzeh district in the north-east of the capital Damascus, and prevented entry and exit. They began raid and search operations on homes and arrested a number of individuals whose identities are not known."

Last Tuesday morning, two explosions occurred outside the building of the Syrian Ministry of Tourism in the Victoria Bridge area in central Damascus, near the hotel where French President Emmanuel Macron was staying during the first visit by a Western head of state to Syria.

The press office of the Syrian Ministry of Health reported on Tuesday that one person was killed and 31 others were injured, with most injuries described as minor. This was the second bombing within a week.
