French President Emmanuel Macron visited the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus on Monday evening alongside his Syrian counterpart Ahmed Al-Sharaa, according to AFP correspondents, shortly after arriving in Syria on the first visit by a leader of a major Western country since Al-Sharaa assumed power at the end of 2024.
After dinner at a restaurant in Old Damascus, the two presidents made their way to the Umayyad Mosque, one of the most famous mosques in the Islamic world.
