Renowned Italian singer Peppino di Capri, a two-time winner of the prestigious Sanremo Music Festival, has died just days before his 87th birthday on the island of Capri, his manager announced in a statement on Tuesday.
Born Giuseppe Faiella — the singer's real name — on the Tyrrhenian island, he drew his stage name from his birthplace.
He was also known as "Champagne" after his hit song of the same name in 1973, and for decades Di Capri was one of the most celebrated figures in Italian popular music.
He also sang in English, German, and French, and achieved international success with numerous songs that reached the top 10 in Germany in the early 1960s.
