FOX Sports, in partnership with the FOX One platform and Indeed, has announced a unique temporary position titled Chief World Cup Watcher — a role designated for one person to follow every match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the largest edition in the tournament's history, in a media experience combining entertainment, digital work and live media production.
According to an official statement issued on 6 May, the position offers a salary of $50,000 — approximately 182,500 dirhams (AED) at current exchange rates — in return for watching 104 complete matches over a 39-day period running from 11 June to 19 July 2026.
Despite widespread coverage framing the role as a work-from-home opportunity to watch football, official details clarified that the job will not be remote. The selected candidate will work from a dedicated space set up in Times Square in New York City, forming part of a live broadcast and interactive coverage operation run by FOX Sports throughout the tournament. Duties include watching matches via the FOX One platform, engaging with audiences on site and continuously producing content for social media.
The position coincides with the historic 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will for the first time feature 48 national teams instead of 32, raising the total number of matches to 104 spread across the United States, Mexico and Canada — the tournament's largest expansion since its inception. The scale of the event makes it a major media occasion requiring round-the-clock coverage given the volume of daily matches and their overlapping schedules across the various stages of competition.
Despite the role's appealing surface, its responsibilities go well beyond watching matches as a leisure activity. They include analysing the technical performance of teams and players, tracking decisive moments and key events during matches, compiling core statistics in real time, contributing to editorial and digital content production, interacting with audiences and producing instant content for social media platforms — all with a full commitment to working throughout the duration of the tournament given the density of the schedule.
The announcement triggered a wide wave of engagement on social media, driven both by the concept of
