Sony has announced it will stop releasing new games for PlayStation consoles on physical discs from 2028, as part of an accelerated shift towards digital distribution.
The company said all new PlayStation games will be available from 2028 in digital format only, attributing the decision to growing consumer demand for digital purchases and noting that around 80% of PlayStation 5 games are currently bought digitally.
Sony also announced it will close the game download stores for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita by mid-next year, meaning users will no longer be able to purchase digital games for either console after that point.
