Balkan countries and Turkey top the global list of highest per capita bread consumption rates annually, by a wide margin over other nations — an indicator reflecting how deeply rooted bread culture is in this region, where bread is a staple rather than a secondary element of the daily table.
While per capita consumption in countries such as India or China is limited to a few kilograms per year, owing to their reliance on rice as the primary source of carbohydrates, the figures reveal an entirely different consumption pattern in Turkey and Eastern European countries, where the per capita bread consumption exceeds 70 kg per year in most countries in this group, reaching its peak in Turkey at more than 199 kg per person — equivalent to approximately 550 grams per day per person.
