Data from the US Department of Energy showed that crude oil inventories in the country's Strategic Petroleum Reserve fell to 331.2 million barrels, the lowest level since June 1983.
Stocks in the government emergency reserve dropped by 9.05 million barrels, the third-largest recorded decline.
The decrease comes as part of a US agreement to withdraw 172 million barrels from the reserve.
