Researchers have discovered a lead tablet dating to the Roman era, found inside a pit in the square of the Dutch city of Heerlen, at a site formerly known as the military settlement of Coriovallum in the province of Lower Germania. The tablet belongs to a category known as "curse tablets" — lead sheets on which the Romans would engrave incantations before burying them in places they associated with supernatural forces.
