An Australian regulatory authority is set to review restrictions on drone flights over Coogee Beach so that lifeguards in New South Wales can scan the area to detect and track sharks, following an attack on Saturday that left a woman with serious injuries, keeping her hospitalised.
Emergency services were called to Coogee Beach in eastern Sydney after a woman was bitten by a shark approximately 30 metres from the shore. Authorities closed Coogee Beach and other nearby beaches for 24 hours following the attack, while drones were deployed in the air to search for sharks.
Tara Moriarty, New South Wales Minister for Agriculture, said the government would consider adopting new measures to protect beachgoers and swimmers from shark attacks, including the use of drones and other technologies.
